Romans

Romans 1:1–7

Paul's greeting — which is actually an entire theology in miniature. He defines his identity, the gospel's content, and Jesus' two-natured existence before he even names his recipients.

Romans 1:8–15

Paul's thanksgiving for the Roman church and his long-standing desire to visit. Beneath the warm tone is a carefully constructed statement of mutual obligation between Paul and Rome.

Romans 1:16–17

The thesis statement of the entire letter — perhaps of Paul's entire theology. Two verses that launched the Protestant Reformation and are still debated in every serious Romans commentary.

Romans 1:18–23

Paul builds the case for universal human guilt, starting with pagan idolatry. His argument: everyone has access to enough knowledge of God through creation to be accountable, yet humanity actively suppresses that knowledge and replaces God with images.

Romans 1:24–32

Three judicial verdicts of divine abandonment — God "gives them over" to increasingly severe consequences. The section ends with a vice list that is a rhetorical trap for Paul's own readers.
