The Big Idea
Jesus isn't asking us to follow better rules β he's calling us to a transformed heart. The standard isn't "did you murder?" but "is there unresolved anger in your heart?" Righteousness that pleases God starts inside and overflows into restored relationships.
Actionable Takeaways
1. Check your heart, not just your actions
Jesus traces murder back to anger. Avoiding the outward act isn't enough β God is after the root. Ask yourself: am I carrying contempt, bitterness, or resentment toward anyone? That's where the work begins.
2. Reconcile before you worship
Jesus doesn't say skip worship β he says prioritize reconciliation. A broken relationship left unaddressed is an obstacle between you and God. Go make it right. Then come back and worship with a clear conscience (v. 23β24).
3. Don't let conflict age
The urgency in v. 25β26 is real. Delayed reconciliation doesn't get easier β it gets heavier. Make the call, send the message, have the conversation. Today is better than tomorrow.

βFor I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, "You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment." But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment... Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court.β
